Hi guys! It’s Naomi Findlay here, your Rapid Renovation Expert.
I have had countless questions over the years about how to build a deck. I was lucky enough to sit down with, actor and chippy, Rowan Howard to talk all things decks; the anatomy, the process of building, and all of his expert tips and tricks!
Key Points:
- Building a deck is not a templated experience. It can completely vary depending on height off the ground, the overall size and span, if you’re going to put a roof over it, whether it is attached or separate from your building, SO MANY VARIABLES. However, there is a basic anatomy of a deck that will always be there.
- Most decks are built on posts which are concreted into the ground with engineer-designed footings of a bare-minimum of 600mm deep, with at least 100mm of concrete surrounding the posts.
- From your posts will be your bearers, which can be inserted into a groove in your post or bolted straight on. This will form the main skeleton of your deck.
- You will then have a joist that will sit either on top or in line with your bearer depending on the height you would like your deck.
- Always determine the direction you would like your decking boards to run at the beginning. Remember that your bears will run parallel to the decking boards, and your joists will be perpendicular.
