How To Paint A Bedroom

Your bedroom is not just a space allocated for a bed; it is an intimate escape from the outside world–a space that should truly reflect your style and personality. Who said bedroom walls have to match the rest of the house? This is your bedroom, so get creative with paint choices that will set the mood for the rest of the furniture and décor.

Select a colour

This is the part where you get to pull up your Pinterest boards and swoon over all the inspiration. Remember that too much choice can actually make it harder to move on to the actual painting! Having said that, try not to rush into your decision simply because you have a free weekend coming up; you may end up opting for a colour that doesn’t quite work with the rest of your furnishings. Pick up a sample pot and test the colour on a small section first–it will save you a lot of time and money if you decide to go for a different colour.

Set up materials

Once you have determined your bedroom colour, it is time to paint. Set aside a weekend and gather your materials: drop cloths, rags and painters tape will save you from having to scrub the floors at a later stage (see here for our article on preparing walls for paint), while an angled paintbrush, roller, paint tray, and extension pole will make the actual painting process quick and easy. Lastly, you need to work out how much paint you actually need. A standard sized wall is about four squared metres–use an online calculator to help you determine the exact amount.

Time to paint

Once your materials are set up you are ready to paint. To avoid breathing in paint fumes and aid in the drying process, always have the bedroom doors and windows open. Start from the top of the bedroom and work your way down to the floor trim; begin by painting the ceiling first, then move onto the walls and finish with the doors, window frames and trim. Keep in mind that these different sections will require different types of paint–ensure you don’t contaminate these by using different brushes and rollers for the ceiling paint, wall paint and enamel (i.e.trim) paint. And don’t forget to let all the paint dry well before introducing your bedroom furniture!
